I don't have the tech savvy to have any knowledge of the professional hosting services that are out there, but I would be curious to know:

1. what the cost is.
2. how easy is it to access the server for resetting it? ie. can I remote access in and reboot it anytime I want?
3. restrictions on unlicensed software such as the b.net hosting clone thingy that we use for HU that Blizzard really doesn't much like us using

If anyone would do a little research on this I might be interested in stepping up and utilizing a service like this for HU

Realm is hosted on my own dedicated server in a Eastern CAN datacenter (Linux)

Both ZeroLag servers are hosted in a Western US datacenter (Windows).

I access them with RDP to update/restart servers.

Basically, server can be restarted with telnet console but sometimes D2GS hangs and need a manual intervention, remote desktop ftw.

For the legal side of D2GS, I think it is not legal since it violate Blizzard terms but well, we can use it as long as Blizzard do not complain about it. If they do, HU will prolly die as well.

Forgot about the cost..

All we have to get is some RAM (512mb minimum, 1gb recommended) on a virtual server. Usually the BW and CPU are good enough.

So, a virtual server with some good ISP can cost around 40$/month.

$40/month is a bit steep for a hobby, are there cheaper options that are viable?

If you have a decent computer you could upgrade your connection for less than 15 a month and host a server. Again if you look at the specs duff posted it's not very high only thing is you have to pay for the up speed from your hosting company which again won't cost much if you already get internet.

yep - pretty much already worked out that math which is why I said "anything cheaper?"

Already tried, not stable enough. Still crashes pretty often even with the wine socket bugfix.

But I may have to try it on many version of Wine to see if one is more stable than another for D2GS 1.10. D2GS 1.11 and 1.12a seems pretty stable now but 1.10 hasnt been updated for years.

Mod crashes may be the problem as well but who knows.

I'll try it again pretty soon anyway.
