Instant crash on opening inventory huh... Sounds like something with installing the high res did not go right. I was able to reproduce a similiar crash problem when I was tampering around with creating a switch between normal and high res.

--Double Post--
Just reproduced the error. Your friend is running DirectDraw video mode. He has the high res files installed but the d2mod plug in has not been updated to use the high res plug in. Since the high res plug in is not activating its causing that error.

--Triple Post--
Your friend needs to check his D2mod.ini file's dll list. It should look like this:

Code:
D2mod=D2mod.dll
D2NewStats=D2NewStats.dll
LevelFX=LevelFX.dll
Utility=Utility.dll
MercMod=MercMod.dll
Portal=Portal.dll
ExtLvl=ExtLvl.dll
GemFix=GemFix.dll
LvlReq=LvlReq.dll
CharStart=CharStart.dll
NewTxt=NewTxt.dll
MercDesc=MercDesc.dll
d2expres=d2expres.dll

Double check to see if the d2expres line is in that list of dll files as displayed (with absolutely nothing else on the line). If the d2mod.ini file checks out try running d2modsetup to install the d2mod plugin (and if first time it asks to uninstall say yes then run it again to install).

If he's crashing talking to NPCs its sounds like his install is bad. Even with the fubared set up that replicates the inventory open crash I can talk to Warriv just fine on my side (going to a vendor to buy stuff however will certainly crash since it opens the inventory which in turn causes the crash).

Loader should hopefully not be the problem. If your friend really suspects its the loader however he could always try the no CD crack I always use for diablo 1.10 (since I never bother with loader). http://www.megagames.com/download/DIABL ... E.NOCD.ZIP

One other possibility I just found out about. It involves an improperly configured D2 shortcut. Is the "Start In: " target actually the d2 folder the mod is installed in? If it's not then the d2mod plug in will fail to start causing the high res plug in to not load (which is the source of the crashes from it not loading).
