I'm looking for some advice on gearing him later in game / end game. I'm having trouble keeping him alive and keeping his resistances up. Is LL his main way of staying alive, or is it boosting him prayer?

I have him geared so far with some DR% from Vamp Gaze Glass Glare and String. I am trying to get his resistances up through the Jewelry but it's just not enough, is Elemental set my only option? Or Soulmancer glove + belt a must? (would have to find it of course).

Finally, conversion vs non conversion. Is there any difference in these guys other than this skill? health survivability etc..

I used full SM + ele set to make him immortal. If you don't have/want to use this you can go sm gloves, imm flesh/nos belt, war travelers/waterwalks/crafted boots with res, rings with res and ll, mgrid/mara/highlord amu, leviathan/gglare/stone rw armor, later steel carapace, weapon insight but no shield with that, if you want shield then lidless/hhglory/ward with skulls/diamonds/res jewelery, weapon of choice, there are melody, harmony, brand, faith etc etc that can be made in javelins. Unique eth javs are good too, one of my mercs use a wraithflight unique ghost glaive.
There is, slightly, nm merc have their stats lower, not much lower but still. Conversion is good for solo, personally I always have a2/a5(except a5combat) from norm, I want them to do damage instead of converting/using rabies.

personally, i like grid +2 blood rings with res over ele set. the flat life boost is always nice.

My fave setup for an a2 merc:
mancers
ice ghost glaive (eth)
medusas
grid
2 x 200+ life blood rings with res

used to solo farm hell ancients way to realm of the slain with him set up like that, rarely took any damage myself and the merc didn't die even on azmo and belial (but i could tele if he started taking heavy damage)

"Super Slower Merc" ftw every time imo.

what is max slow on bosses/monsters? ive used up to 53% really, decrep and my merc uses wraith flight unique 20%slow i dont see much of a change.

medusas looks sorta nice for a2 merc though. how much slow does lvl 12 HF add?

details on slow are in the basic mechanics thread (that needs updated for some stuff actually.

Slow is treated as the opposite of FCR, FRW, Faster attack speed. Caps include 50% per source vs players/act bosses, and 90% for normal monsters. (sources are slow target, chill, holy freeze ect). In addition there are minimums like attack speed can't be lower then 15% of base animation speed.

I'd assume little to nothing stars, since I find them all the time, and they're literally only useful on a2 mercs which are completely inferior to a3 mercs.

Just curious..why ghost glaive and not winged harpoon? According to Blue's site it seems that harpoon has comparable if not better average damage as well as faster speed (-20 for harpoon and 0 for glaive).

Seems like the modifiers make a massive difference. The Ghost Glaive has slow enemy 20% (which is awesome on a a2 merc), prevents monster heal, ignores' targets defence, 10% slow missile (also great especially for a sorc with tele), and reanimates 5% which helps for tanking.

I believe PureRage is using the ICE runeword rather than uniques:

+350-400% Enhanced Damage
25% Chance to Cast Level 25 Frost Nova when Struck
50% Chance to Cast Level 50 Frost Nova when Striking
Level 12 Holy Freeze Aura When Equipped
+25% to Cold Skill Damage
-25% to Enemy Cold Resistance
(240-300)% Extra Gold from Monsters
8% Life Stolen per Hit
+20% Increased Attack Speed
+10% Increased Run/Walk Speed
1% Chance of Crushing Blow
15% Chance of Deadly Strike

Probably for the Holy Freeze aura.

As to why Ghost glaive to make the word in rather than winged harpoon, my guess is either: [a] he had a ghost glaive handy and didn't have a winged handy or [b] he wanted to be able to use it faster (lvl80 r/w and lvl85 req for winged).

Oh - incidentally, PMH does not work with mercs as far as I know.

ghost glaive because it's slower. Damage is so low on a merc that they dont leech enough to help them survive on bosses and slower attack = less counters ;). I would have preferred if he didnt attack at all. He ws just an aura bitch/ something for enemys to slowly swing at while i nuked em.
