I am chasing down a game crash bug that may be related to too many properties on an item to be displayed on screen. Seems to me that if you toss a psn facet in to say Trang's armor the additional item properties of that jewel combined with the abundance of mods on the armor itself is just too much for the game to handle.

The question though is how to test this. I am not real good at single player editing & testing, so I was wondering if anyone who is talented in that area could do a little poking around and seeing if you can get it to happen.

Thanks!

I'm long ago in ModMaking, and I can help you if I can.

From what I understanded the game Crashes when you put a PsnFacet in TrangArmor?
Right?

I thing that the game got's a limited rows.
If you make item with more properties of the limit:
1) It doesn't display anything.
2) The game Crashes.

If you want I can make a few Tests in Single player and will tell you the results.

that is my theory. Only info I know is that psn facet + armor = broken game. It *might* be related to my new graphics too, but I am trying to rule that out.

Would greatly appreciate the testing - thanks!

I've just socketed A Trang Armor with 2 Posion Facets and no problems.
I'll now try to make it when I got the Full Set.

pS:

With a FullSet and two PoisonFacets in the Armor I still don't have any problems.

Sometimes it depends on the resolution of your PC.
Or even if your playing or Full or Windowed Mode.

What's your Res Blue? And what about the Mode you play?
I want to figure this problem out ;]

ya - i am wondering if it is a laptop issue.

I haven't had the crash myself, but PureRage and Nebs have run in to the problem.

it was last season for me with the IK maul on my a5 merc. The other parts showed all mods, though with the full set it wouldnt show the properties of the helm. With 5 parts it would. With the weapon and 5 parts equiped i couldnt see the properties of the weapon. With the full set the game would crash when i hovered over the weapon.

This is a complete shot in the dark, but you may also want to consider the number of STATES called. I think if you go over 18 the game no likey...i.e. ever heard of a drop barb? The results in the 1.12 patch in vanilla are not quite the same as you are describing, but it does cause everyone else to crash around you if you get anywhere near them...like I said, it's a shot in the dark.

yeh I know of the thing you are talking about. It was only my game that would drop though. other people in the game would still be in there and able to play in that game. I think its more a problem with the number of lines in the item description. Ie. a massive list on the one item along with the massive list of set bonuses makes for a loooooooong list. Since with a few less set bonuses (with fewer parts equiped) the discription would just not show up, then with even less parts ( and less set bonuses) they would all show up.

I may post something over at the phrozen keep to see if there is indeed a limit, what that limit may be, and does it depend on monitor settings etc. Will let ya know if they say anything.

EDIT: Has anyone tried windowed mode vs full screen? Does it happen in both?

After inquiring at the Phrozen Keep I got this answer.

It is caused by a buffer overflow.
http://phrozenkeep.hugelaser.com/forum/ ... 73#p434873

Also it may be worthwhile for some to read the thread linked in their answer...it may be a bit more complicated than just the items in question. Some things in here could explain why some crash and others do not.

Another interesting point was raised. Are folks using other language settings? Here is why I ask

Me "Greatly appreciated. So I guess it is possible that the reason that some do not crash may also be linked to what is in their inventory as well? Interesting. This could help to explain why some crashed and others did not. Thanks again."

Necrolis "well, its due to the langauge the the user is running rather, as certain languages have more chars in strings than the english counter parts, thus fill up the buffer a lot more. there is also cause where the buffer size is run over, but the memory below it is zeroed, thus it still can correctly terminate, else it just continues and crashes"

If the Trang Oul set is still bugging because of "the abundance of mods", you could just remove some of these caster useless properties :

+100 to life
+10 to strength
+100% enhanced damage
33% life stolen per hit
50% open wound
Prevent monster heal
Increase maximum life 20%

But you could just relocate some mods attributed to armor to the gloves and/or belt (no sockets) if you feel necro really need them... LoL this set is ridiculous.

yep Tsume, that was my thought. I could think of a few to trim down and might just do that anyways as a safety. Would love to have it confirmed though before suggesting to rip things out.

I think the only way you are going to really confirm this is to systematically test it. Otherwise we are probably stuck with believing the dudes over at the keep, or chalking it off as odd happenstance.

Have trang armor/hat with wirt jewels whose give like +7/8 more opt to description(-req is on it already and something I think) and never had such issue. Running Eng ver of d2, installed from disc not downloaded from bnet.

Also make sure to check logs. Like Izzu dung lvl2 crash gives some info about wrong monsters, maybe this will be noted too.

Post subject:  Re: Socketting set armor

Put different jewels in every socket with as many mods on them as possible. The longer the tag for each mod the better. Heck even keep track of the number of characters (not sure if spaces are ignored or not). See if someone can come up with the number of characters needed to crash it, assuming that you can. Do it again and see if the same number comes up. I suggest doin it in single player, lest you want to bork a character that you like and lose the items on said character.
