have you modified the target properties of the shortcut (and original file?) to the d2 file in your d2 folder with -direct -txt?

go in to your shortcut of the newloader and on the end of the target line you make a space and write
-direct -txt
There is a space between them

right click the newloader, press properties. there are several tabs, go to the shortcut tab.
There it says:
NewLoader - shortcut
Target type: Application
Target location: Diablo II
Target: "C:\Users\Verb\Diablo II\NewLoader.exe" -direct -txt -skiptobnet -w

The last one that says target, thats where you add the -direct -txt. as you can see this is my target line and I have -skiptobnet so that I dont have to see the blizzard and blizzard north screen, and -w makes so its in windowed mode. You dont need the last two if you dont want to.
I couldnt make a screenshot so I hope this helps

you're only supposed to do it on the shortcut. Also in your shortcut, go to compatibility and check the boxes on Disable visual themes and Disable desktop composition. You might also want to run the program in compatibility mode for windows XP(service pack 3).
Should work then
