So I get this error code as soon as I get the central part of the Graveyard. Anyone know how I can fix this?

I don't recall seeing this issue before, so will start with the usual questions:
  1. Which version of HU are you playing?
  2. Are you using D2SE?
  3. Which Operating System are you using?

From the error report, it looks like you've got D2 installed to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II", which might cause issues in Windows after WinXP. Recent Windows versions have become pretty strict about the permissions of programs running from the Program Files folders, which cn cause issues for older programs like Diablo2. Using D2SE helps get around these issues since it's a relatively new program. I don't think your problem is related to this since you've already been getting D2 up and going.

If you're using D2SE, then once you've selected the mod's banner on the left side of the startup screen, make sure you start the mod by either double-clicking the banner or by pressing the "Start Plugin" button in the top-right. If you accidentally started via "Start D2" button beside it, then you might be playing an exciting mix of Vanilla (where Graveyard has no dungeons) and HU (Graveyard has dungeons). This could be a cause for your issue.

If you're genuinely using HUv1.12, let me know where you downloaded it from (link to it), since a while back we were trying to link to all the HU versions so folks could try the one they liked best. I think we only got back as far as 1.21 (suspiciously similar to your v1.12).

I forgot to ask, but did you install D2:LoD and upgrade to v1.10? If you installed via Blizzard's online CDs, then I think those are v1.14 which is currently incompatible with most D2 mods. D2:LoD v1.13 can be used with HU if you are using D2SE. If you're stuck with v1.14, then download the entire file tree provided by Ensley03. That file tree is set up for HUv1.6, but you can make another folder for another HU version and use the v1.6 setup as an example.

Things to try (in any order you want to try, maybe try just one at a time and let us know which solved the issue or if none of them did):
  1. Re-run D2ModSetup.bat, and confirm that at the D2 start menu, in the bottom left that you see "v 1.10" and "D2Mod System 1.03".
  2. Copy&Paste your D2 installation from ProgramFiles to C:\D2\, this might help with issues related to Win10 permissions that are pretty hard to predict.
  3. Install D2SE, it's just a mod manager that is compatible with D2:LoD v1.09 to v1.13. This introduces a "mod" folder, in which you make your own folders for D2 mods and then decompress the mod files there. For example, you might have "C:/D2/Mods/HUv1_21/<contains patch_d2.mpq, char saves folder, etc>". You will need this HUv1.21z D2SE Setup.ini file to explain to D2SE that HUv1.21 is using the D2ModSetup system and to run with D2:LoDv1.10.

Hi Brevan,

My last post I made a typo, it is version 1.21 Single player one and I downloaded it from the front page of hell unleashed. I am playing from the online downloaded version of d2 off blizzard so it is version 1.14. if I downgrade ill get the "You need the d2 disc" message and I have a laptop that doesn't have a cd loader. So what should I do from this point? Download D2SE?

If you're even capable of downloading from v1.14, then I'm curious how, since I haven't heard of a way to do that (this is why I recommend the file-tree to folks, which is a cumbersome workaround).

I also play on a Netbook without a CD drive, I'd recommend using D2SE (option 3 mentioned earlier), which will come with the file-tree download. There's a little CD icon on the right-middle side of the D2SE starting screen (by the "Allow HC Chars" checkbox), if that icon is red, then you're missing some mpq files from the CDs (usually d2xMusic.mpq) that you can just drag that into your D2 folder. If the icon is green, then you're good to go. I haven't actually downloaded the file-tree myself, but I'm 95% confident that it will solve your problems and be setup for HUv1.6 already. You'll just need to make a new folder in the mods folder and extract the HUv1.21 files to that along with the setup.ini file I linked to. Maybe double check that the D2SE.exe program is running as administrator, etc.

There's a good chance that we'll need to troubleshoot whether or not you should use the glide wrapper settings (most players use this), or maybe use directdraw (this is what I use).

That sounds a bit like the program doesn't have permissions to run, have you already tried changing the permissions as mentioned in the file tree thread instructions?

The full tree download is just the installation folder for D2:LoD after Ensley installed D2SE and HUv1.6.

It's recommended that you extract that folder to C:\D2\, so that you'd have the this kind of folder tree:
C:\D2\D2SE.exe
C:\D2\Game.exe (along with about 60 other files and folders)
...
C:\D2\d2xmusic.mpq (along with another 10 or so .mpq files)
...
C:\D2\MODS\HUv1.6\

Once that is done, you'd need to change the permissions for some of the .exe programs so your computer will run them as if they were an administrator (just like they used to back in 1997), so you'd right-click on
D2SE.exe
Game.exe
Diablo2.exe
maybe D2VidTst.exe (it's configured on my machine at least, but it probably doesn't need it)
and configure them to run as if they were on WindowsXP, and as Administrator.

Before working with HUv1.21, run D2SE.exe and confirm that it opens a window such as (I just grabbed this pic from the internet):Image

Top Right
StartPlugin - Runs the mod selected on the left (you could also just double click that mod's banner)
StartD2 - Starts D2 and I think ignores mod files. Generally not what we want.
Display Options: my machine works well with DirectDraw, but if the game seems slow or strange, then try Glide. You'll need to configure Glide (it'll open another window where every setting has some information at the bottom to give you a hint about how to set it. Most players swear that Glide is the way for them, but I don't have too much experience with that.

Middle Right:
Checkboxes to Disable Sound, allow HC chars even though you might not have completed SC Normal difficulty, use the PlugY mod (I don't know everything it does, but it allows your SinglePlayer chars to share a stash, and lets the stash have many pages of items. Some mods can't work with this, I've heard that HU can run with it. I don't know how to set it up, but there are online tutorials).

Bottom Right:
D2 Startup Commands: these two checkboxes tell D2SE to tell D2 to look for a "data" folder (e.g. C:\D2\MODS\HUv1.6\data\) which could contain overrides for all the data in file patch_d2.mpq. You might use this if you downloaded a no-extra-music version of HU but changed your mind and wanted to grab that music from another version (e.g. one guy did this recently).

Try running a vanilla version for a minute, just to see if you can make a char and it loads. This would confirm that D2SE is not a problem.

Try running HUv1.6 for a minute (you might need to scroll down the list on the left), just to see if you can make a char and it loads. This would confirm that HU isn't a problem.

Let me know when you've gotten this far and if you need a hand putting HUv1.21 into the MODS folder.

Well wait how should my files look? Should the 1.16 files overwrite the original D2 files after installing it?

If you're using Ensley03's file tree, then you shouldn't have to worry about installation, everything needed is in the folder, but you might have to edit permissions on some of the important files like Game.exe, DiabloII.exe, and D2SE.exe. Please read the information in that thread if you're still not sure how that works, otherwise you might accidentally be making this harder than it needs to be :)

Okay so I did all that got the game up and running however now when I'm playing in 1.16 the weapon equip area is all wonky. How can I downgrade it to 1.21? just create a folder in the mods section?

That's right, make a new folder with a descriptive name, like HUv1.21, and then decompress the files from HUv1.21 to that folder. You'll need to include the D2SE.ini for HUv1.21 file. That ini file tells D2SE what modsystem is being used and what .dll files to include, so it's a pretty critical file.

You don't have to delete the HUv1.6 folder, it might even be handy if you want to compare with your v1.21 folder and figure out what's missing if things don't work out well. There's a good chance that v1.6 folder was using the HighRes (1024x768 rather than normal 800x600) version, so it will have an extra file or two. That resolution mismatch is probably why things weren't aligned as you mentioned.

Good stuff, glad to hear things are cooperating. If you get tired of HUv1.21, there are also HUv1.3 to HUv1.7 available. If you wanted all of them available at the same time, then with D2SE that would only require about a gigabyte of hard drive space. I think it's fun to see how the mod has changed or changed back.
