Tried booting up some HU today and Vista tells me straight away ''Diablo has stopped working". Ok, what's gone wrong now? I reinstalled everything from scratch and still nothing. So I went through step by step to see what's going wrong.

Installed D2 and the expansion from the discs (yes, I still have those antiques) then patched it to 1.10. That worked fine.

Freshly downloaded HU and the update and installed them without problems. So far, so good.

Then comes d2Loader and I get the "..stopped working" error message. So this is most likely the problem I started with. I got a fresh Loader from newd2event.com and that didn't help. I searched the forums and found an alternate version of Loader uplinked by Blue or Pure, can't remember who now. Tried that, still no luck.

I play with the disc in anyway, but I thought I'd try and copy/paste the missing .mpq files from the disc (never had to before, mind you) and still nothing.

So I have to play Loader-less, that's fine. I got friends who can make a game for me to mule in and I don't dual log to rush or anything like that anyway. The best thing about Loader for me is the 5 seconds of time shaved off at the beginning when it doesn't have to read off the disc.

But I thought I'd put this story up to see if anyone else has come across similar issues. My software environment is Windows Vista with latest DirectX. Diablo was working one day but not the next, the only system changes made between that time were turning the power off and on again ^^. I'd love to hear some ideas or suggestions as to what I could do to fix this, but I know the only one who has all the information to diagnose it is me and that I'm shit out of luck if I can't. But it's worth asking anyway.

That anonymous callback thing is unsecapp.exe. I never noticed that running before so I turned it off like you said and jusched.exe too even though that's always running despite my protests :P Loader still wasn't working.... so I restarted the machine just to be sure and guess what, it works.

Now I don't know exactly why or how it started working again but everything seems hunky-dory now. Those programs you mentioned are all back and running again like a bad smell that won't go away, which Windows is full of I'm sure. But thanks for the suggestion, Kannli, I tried it out and now it works, credit where credit's due.
