So I've looked through all of the cain crashes, they're all dead threads with no solutions...but yeah I ran into this just TODAY.
I didn't change anything since last time that I talked to cain...

Error window:
UNHANDLED_EXCEPTION:
ACCESS_VIOLATION(c0000005)

I went to my little D log thing it says there's something wrong with access violation to d2client.dll.

i don't think d2 has a retry ability so it could be anything that throws that fault.

well, random crash from cain due to dll edit. Do Norm/NM/H game and speak to him and that could do the trick.
btw. c0000005 is 1.10 feature from blizzard, enjoy ^^

All of my characters now crash when talking to Cain. Why is this unexplainable phoenomenon happening?

Looks like I don't talk to Cain now.. and stock up on identify scrolls!

OK, here we go, gonna reinstall this. (Don't know how a file gets corrupt here anyhow.)

1> Copied the clean 1.13 into another directory outside the Program Files folder
2> Downgraded it to 1.10
3> Copied 1.21 full multiplayer
4> Updated it to 1.21z
5> Ran the modsetup to install it.

Ran Diablo2 using the batch file.

Logged in.

Selected a random character.

Talked to Cain.

Crashed with Assertion Failure.

You doing an install from CDs or from a downloaded file?

I still have the CDs, so when I do a clean install I:

1. uninstall the game
2. install the game
3. upgrade to 1.10
4. install HU

That has always pretty much wiped out any strange Blizzard code related crashes (as opposed to HU code crashes) which is what this Cain drop looks like.

Is there some sort of similar process for people who have downloaded files?

I always leave the original untouched. When I want to play a mod, I make a copy of the folder and put it somewhere else.

By the way Blue.. Third time's the charm, I can talk to Cain now.

Rock on! I dunno how those installs screw up, but it seems like somewhere along the line it fumbles and a reinstall seems to fix it. Glad to hear that was the case this time around.

Make sure that you delete the D2 folder after uninstall. That retains all kinds of data files that continue to f up the game if not removed.
