not all the immunities can be broken , combine lr/conviction/holy aura + your -enemy res gear is what helps. some are just immune.

Pierce does not break immunities, only reductions. Pierce is only effective once the immunity has been broken

now if this is true how could a frozen orb sorc in vanilla d2 pierce cold immune with 1 point into mastery? Unless PureRager changed this but as far as i know pierce is pierce, lets not leave out you'll do crap for damage but hey,

They didn't.
Unless they had a merc with Infinity stick or something similar.

Auras and curses lower maximum resistance. Pierce (from facets, gems, etc) only works once immunities are broken.

This is always the way it has been.

In LoD, cold immunes in particular were generally harder to break than the other immunities because they average 'cold immune' had at least 110 cold res. Poison was also harder to break since it in not affected by conviction, only lower res.

This is part of the reason why lightning sorc's were the so much more prolific.

I believe if a monster has exactly 100% cold resistance, pierce will break the immunity. Anything above would require conviction or lr. Maybe that's the case for your cold mastery breaking an immunity?
