Might be on the single player version only (I hate playing Diablo II with other people) but when you enter the Catacombs of Anguish and get up to the brute dude with a pet bear the game crashes several seconds after his demise.

I thought it was a once off, but no, it happened the second time I attempted it as well. It comes up with an error message, stating FATAL EXCEPTION and that the program has to close down.

Any feedback on this odd error would be greatly appreciated. It's essentially game breaking unless I skip the boss somehow.

Edit: On further analysis, it happened again, I made sure i had no thorns equipment on and that i didn't press alt immediately, it seems he's also the end of act boss in place of Andariel, which makes simply skipping him impossible.

Guess I'll have to update to the multiplayer version, make a back up of my save, go kill him with some buddies and see if that works, ugh. :/

So yes, this is indeed a game-breaking bug, as it forbids you from progressing beyond Act 1.

Like I said, it's probably only the single player version, since there's no mention of it in this list of threads. If any one finds or has in the past found a work around, let me know ASAP.

Cheers
-Biz

This belongs in the tech support forum.

There are differences between the single-player and multi-player version, so it's likely your issue isn't well known. Since the crash is occurring when your fight ends, I think it's likely due to a problem with his portal being spawned. It's likely that the log file will help solve the problem.

To find the log file, go the in installation directory of HU (this might be C:\Program Files\Diablo II"), and look for a text file with a name starting with "D2" and ending in 6 more numbers and ".txt" such as "D2130518.txt". Note that the 6 numbers near the end are the date of that file (D2YYMMDD), so look for the most recent.

Go ahead and open the file with a simple text editor (Notepad with word-wrap turned off works well). Note that each line of the file starts with a time-stamp (hour, minute, second, millisecond). If you scroll to the end of the file, there is information about what happened before D2 closed itself. Some of it is likely going to be very repetitive (essentially the game panicking every millisecond because it still can't find an animation file or something). At the end of the repetitive bit it will have a few lines mentioning that the game will close.

It would be helpful if you copy-pasted a couple lines from the repeating bit to the end of the file (I'm expected maybe around 10-30 lines, not 1000), and included them. If there's no repeating bit, then maybe copy the last 10 seconds of gameplay messages. It's likely that someone will spot the problem.

<edit>With regards to your new access_violation information, these types of bug can sometimes be fixed by restarting the computer. Give that a try.</edit>

Hopefully that's enough, if you need more, let me know.

I should have mentioned, I'm using PlugY and I recently tested the edits by PureRage which made no difference, it's likely I have some form of thorns I don't know about which is causing the portal spawn bug, but i didn't think that alone crashed the game.

Also, sorry for not putting this in the right place, I did look for a bug forum and didn't see tech support, sorry. Thanks for letting me know so I can post in the right place in the future.

In your log file, notice that at 01:59:25.387, there is a message about a missing file. I've checked my HU files (multi-player edition from a couple patches ago), and indeed that file doesn't exist, so I'm not sure why your version is even looking for it.

I'll back out from further advice, since it's likely that someone with more recent experience is needed, or someone with experience using additions like PlugY or PureRage's edits. If no one comes around soon, then consider just reinstalling the HU mod with as few other mods as you are comfortable with. If you can then get past Andy then perhaps add in other mods and retry her until something breaks.

I can promise that this isn't related to the thorns-portal bug, since that doesn't crash the game. Some bosses open portals when they are killed, but if they died to thorns, a holy-aura pulse, or BladeShield, then the game doesn't open the portal. All that happens is that you're left to pick through their entrails until you get bored and make a new game while cursing the noob that didn't turn off their aura, unsummon their IronGolem, or back away from the fight at the last second.

I wonder if I placed that file in the correct location if it would cease the bug, I might try that, if it can find it it may do nothing extra, but if it doesn't crash the game I'm not going to honestly care.

I have MPQ editor already, so all I need to do is grab that file from the 113b multiplayer patch DATA.MPQ and add it to the DATA.MPQ of the single-player one, I'm hoping that will fix it.

If it does, I'll report back.

Edit: No such luck, couldn't find any files prefixed with ! in the DATA/MONSTERS/!B/COF folder in either MPQ. I also looked in the original zip's MPQ to make sure mine wasn't defective, no luck.

So yeah, I'll try uninstalling PlugY and the edits which probably don't do anything on the single player version regardless and report back any results.

Alright, it evidently was a problem with Plugy, uninstalling it fixed the issue, I went onto fight Andariel and killed her, I'll reinstall it now that I've gotten passed that and am up to Act 2, if the error happens again, I know what to do now.

Thanks for all the help, this can probably be closed now.

Edit: You can actually simply launch the Hell Unleashed.exe rather than the Plugy survival kit.exe, no need to uninstall plugy each time.
