If I put a level 66 gem in a level 56 item, will it just go to level 66, or will it possibly go higher? I think I've done this before and screwed myself (couldn't wear the item anymore) but I can't remember. I'm level 66 now so if it makes the item go above 66 then I'm screwed. I want to put a Moonstone diamond in my hand of blessed light.

If the item is lvl 56 and you add any moonstone to it it will become lvl 66..
Now if you used a uber gem lvl 88 the item will become lvl 88..

Ok it worked that way, lol.

Bonus question: is there a cap to replenish life or regenerate mana% ? Wondering if 4 skulls in a helm for a shit ton of regen would work.

There is not a cap for either stat. The formula to approximate how much life is gained per second is: +Replenish Life * 25 / 256 = Life Per Second
The life gained by 4x Soul Skulls in a helm would be 132 +Replenish Life, which approximates to about 12.89 life per second. That's a really insignificant value, not even recovering 1000 life over a minute period.

I guess with some large focus it could provide a small amount of noticeable healing, but that's at the expense of 8 wasted sockets, so there's no reason to ever bother.
If you want healing that is not life leech or potions, you're better off using a A2 Prayer merc.

Mana Regeneration % works well as it scales with your maximum mana value. However, its generally better to focus on making your mana bulb bigger because increasing your maximum mana will in turn increase your mana regeneration rate.
As a side note, gearing for a bigger mana pool instead of additional mana regeneration also makes Meditation aura have a bigger impact on your character.

It's far from a bad stat to have, but I wouldn't prioritize it above %maximum mana and +flat mana if I was struggling for mana. In most situations its better than +Energy, especially for the classes with shit mana per energy.

Quick way to get fast mana life regen is to put 1 point into redemption and run that makes a big differance.. 8-)
