I was reading about upgrading and I can't help but think it seems "too easy" to get good (even great) items. According to the critter killer website, I can take a normal unique and with a ral + sol rune, make a exceptional version of it. So does this mean that if I took a howltusk great helm + ral + sol + adamant hammer in the cube, I will get a valkyrie wing?

Assuming that is how it works (which I find unbelievable still), can I double this to get an elite item? For instance: blastbark -> godstrike -> windforce??????? with just the addition of a ral + sol rune + adamant hammer, then ko + um + adamant hammer? That means I basically got windforce from a level 36 item and some runes that you're almost guaranteed to find as you make your way to the level req for windy.

Am I missing something here?!

From Critterkiller, under upgrading: Weapon/Armor MUST be Crafted/Unique/Set (no White/Rare)

Wrong on that.

It changes your howtusk great helm into a howltusk winged helm. The base changes, not the item. So basically it has the stats of howltusk and just changes the base item (defense along with that, and damage changes on weapons, but keeps the same %edamage or %edefense).

I believe that there was a similar Horadric Cube recipe in vanilla D2, albeit with different runes. Had the same effect as well.

The way the level requirements increase with upped uniques can be a bit unpredictable at times, especially when you have gems and runes socketed. You ought to be prepared to end up with an item that may be unusable for several levels, so I would be a bit wary of ypgrading uniques that are the mainstays of your arsenal. Some items don't improve very much when upgraded, and it can be a bit fustrating when you uprade an item, finally reach the level to use it only to find that your upped unique is inferior to a recent find.

Of course, upgrading uniques is a great way to get access to exceptional-class items that you normally wouldn't find until much later.

the level req of the item will be the base item level +8. Ie an upped buriza comes out at level 80 (collosus xbow base level req =72)
