Maxing hammer, its synergies, conc, and then 1 point in the res auras, and 1 point into redemption is pretty much all you need skill wise. From there, holyshield is a great idea. The more defense the merrier when your standing infront of a boss.
The reset before this, my first HC character was a hammerdin. While questing, and even end game, the main focus gear wise was pretty straight forward. Get as much life, damage reduce, absorb, and chance to block as possible. The hard part about this, is you want to always have 125% faster cast. Anyone that disagrees with this, I call em a noob.
As merc's go, I went with an act1 phys merc(duh?). Her already high damage when mixed with conc from the paly made trash killing a joke(soloing 8spawn tundra FTW).
Most of us on HC are pretty anal retentive, we're constantly crafting blood rings and caster ammys, hoping for that GG kick all ass roll. When you start doing this, is when your character will really start to take off.
End game my paly used a paladin blood ring with fcr and tons of str/life. Then I went with a +2 paly 40%+ caster ammy with str. The rest of the gear was typical, full mancers, wisp for sob/oak/how, +3hammer hoto.
