I played with a Volcano/MBoulder/Armageddon druid recently (v1.20). The Elemental skills synergize a bit poorly, so that you can't have every point helping all yours skills (at least if you're using 1/2phys+1/2Fire skills like Volcano).
I played my druid to about level 85 (A5 NM), and his damage was alright for trash, but none of his skills were suitable for bosses. I originally expected Volcano to be decent against bosses, but even around skill level 40, it's damage is only about 4k + 4k, and it hits a lot less often than I expected. That aside, the build was decent in Normal, and kinda fun. It started to lose it's fun when the availability of getting more +Skills was harder.
When it comes to fire element druids, it's almost silly not to go with the FireStorm/FireClaws/Armageddon route. The synergies are fewer, and with higher %. The base damage of FireClaws is quite high, and you can get up to 12 applications of that damage per second. You also get the easy life buff of Lycanthropy.
The merc I went with was A5 wolf. My goal was for him just to tank and keep things clumped up. He used stuff to lower enemy damage while maintaining high absorbs (elementalist set, glassglare), and high %physRes (vamp gaze, SoE). I tried Lawbringer for Decrep (I just wanted to merc to reduce enemy damage, not necessarily apply his own. Decrep also helped my skills). I also tried Heaven's Set hat for Weaken (it's not that bad for just tanking purposes).
I used a Spirit of Barbs as my main summon (put 10 points into it), and used the Life and Mana vines to reclaim bodies. SoB thorns wasn't noticeable, but the curse and poison reduction was nice. I rarely got hit, so I didn't bother with Oak. The merc rarely took much damage, so again Oak would have been more of a waste than SoB. I considered using SoB as my boss-killer since Volcano didn't work well, but the Thorns wasn't enough, evn with the merc's Decrep. I'm sure a CBlow setup on the merc would have been reasonable for weaker bosses.
