D-tail has its basis in phy damage but it does fire damage, right?
I really have no idea how this attack works, anyone know?
Is it really phy damage but affected by fire absorb/resists?
Can anyone clarify a little for me please?

It's fire damage is very quirky. It is based on the physical damage actually dealt.
In order to fire off good fire damage you must hit an enemy with low physical resist. It doesn't matter how much physical kick damage you have for fire damage inflicted wise if you kick a physical immune. If you kick a physical immune the fire explosion will be 0 damage since the physical damage dealt on the initial kick was 0 damage.
Outside of the immune situation however the raw fire damage generated is based on a multiplier on the actual physical damage dealt (thus the directly targeted enemy having not so high physical resist is paramount to getting a good fire explosion). However this is raw fire damage generated. It's still subject to enemy fire resist (which could be mitigated by -enemy fire resist) and enemy %fire absorb (in case of bosses).
While dtail may post VERY big numbers on the fire damage in the character screen there's one problem with actually delivering it. Namely being the fire damage gets mitigated twice. The first mitigation comes from the enemy's physical resist reducing the direct kick damage which in turn reduces your fire explosion's raw damage. The second mitigation being once the fire explosion goes off the enemy's fire resists/absorbs get to work on mitigating the fire damage that's already been cramped by the kick reciever's physical resist.

Dragon Tail's mechanics are pretty funky, but I'll try to explain how the skill functions best I can.
What happens when you Dragon Tail a monster is: 1) It checks your total damage against the physical resistance of a monster. 2) It converts that damage into Fire damage and then checks that against a monsters fire resistance (and fire absorbs, I believe).
To clarify, your final damage is Fire Damage. Also, the physical resistance check only happens in the monster you specifically kick with Dragon Tail. The AoE Fire damage is a result of this. The reason this is nifty is because you can Dragon Tail a non-physical immune to damage kill a physical immune. In a similar light, you get more Dragon Tail damage by specifically kicking a low physical resistance monster instead of one that has higher physical res. (IE: Ice Spawn versus Overlord in Tundra)
This double-check is why Dragon Tail benefits from both Amplify Damage and passive pierce. With adequate passive pierce, you produce waay more damage with Amplify Damage than with Lower Resist. Hopefully that's a decent explanation of how the skill works.
Also, the other big thing to note is that the ED% from Tiger Strike and the ED% from Dragon Tail do not stack additively. They stack multiplicative and that's where you see the huge damage numbers produced by a charged Dragon Tail. (This means you'll be having thousands of ED% instead of maybe ~2k %ED). And just one last thing, boot damage is a huge part of the kick equation. It's vital to always have the best boots for your level (crafts are very good for this) as they will always add very significant damage. The best damage boots are Adamant Boots which require 152 strength.
EDIT: Whoops, looks like Baerk beat me to it.
