the ones that have a percentage will reduce it by that percent, if its solid numbers, it will be minusing that much from damage. depending on if its phyiscal or magic(fire, cold, lightning, etc)

its not equal to the other ; there's a particular order, i think the game first reduces ur damage by the % you have, and then applies the flat reduce

DR%: 50% is the max. Everything above that is ignored until you are amped. If you have, let's say, stacked 80% DR and a level 1 amp is cast on you, you will still have 50%.

DR/MDR has no limit. Iron Skin's DR is directly added to your total DR, so it is applied at the same time.

With a minute spent on googling, I found the following:
LorveN wrote:
...
pdr - integer physical damage reduced. No cap.
%dr - percentage physical damage reduced. Capped at 50%
mdr - integer magical damage reduced. Applies to magic/lightning/fire/cold damage.
%mdr - resists. You all know how resists work. Capped at 75% unless you got gear increasing maximum resists.
Absorb - integer absorb. No cap. Magical absorb only affects magical damage, not elemental damage.
%Absorb - percentage absorb. Capped at 40%. Magical absorb only affects magical damage.

...

The damage dealt is reduced by above mentioned 'modifiers' in a specific order. The order is as follows:
1) XvX penalty (PvP penalty = -5/6)
2) Sorceress Energy Shield
3) Necromancer Bone Armor and/or Druid Cyclone Armor
4) Integer DR/MDR
5) Percentage resists (including DR%)
6) Percentage absorb
7) Integer absorb

Gravy, so IS dr% is essentially useless.

Not really. It helps a ton vs big damage spikes, like chargers in a5.

I suppose my question would be if it's worth maxing, or if + skills alone will get me to the cap.

Just like Natural Resist which is also useless due to the low mdr for the points invested.

the max you can get from %dr skills is 20 since they are all hard points only as far as i know.

DR% (and life) are leagues better than PDR for anything outside of normal. Flat PDR won't make much a difference on any of the attacks you really need to worry about.

It see's you through all of NM too if you focus on it. I'm still negating pretty much everything in act 5 nm including chargers with 140ish PDR/MDR and diablo dealt very little damage (could get by with super heals)) since its applied before amp, it helps alot. I'm easily out tanking most of the barbs around the same level and I only got 3k life pre buffs. I'ma stick with pdr/mdr till she dies to see how far it can take you. (only 8 levels till I push her to over 200 PDR/MDR baby!)

I did a MDR/PDR assassin several ladders ago and she did quite well even in Hell. I think the character was born from either an argument with you or Jarl about MDR/PDR and its impact when I was campaigning for stronger diamonds to make them a viable strategic option rather than everyone simply going rubies or amethysts 100% of the time.

Things have changed quite a bit since then, but so has the availability of PDR/MDR on items, so I suspect you will be "ok" with this character even in Hell. Damage spikes are the big worry - as is always the case with diamonds. I seem to recall Hell Diablo being a walk in the park for that Assassin.

i can lose 2 rings for 12% sorb if needed and am currently sitting at 24%dr and a handsome 30k def. I rarely take a hit and the freeze on waterwalks + fend makes for amazing trash control. The only thing I'm wary of is a might enchanted Korlic.

The really nasty damage spikes are usually caused by being amped (I don't have an issue with being amped when I'm negating so much of the initial hit. I'm abit low on lifesteal atm but a super red heals fast enough anyway (even in the middle of a nasty mob/boss). I don't like to depend on lifesteal much outside of normal anyway, it's easier to just reduce the incoming damage as much as possible.

Current stats:
100ish base str
50ish base dex
xxx vita
base energy

Skills:
maxed decoy
5ish in valk
maxed jab
maxed fend
1 point impale
currently maxing strategy (need the ar + def)

21k impale
12k fend
8.7k jab
3.2k life pre buffs
24%dr
128 PDR
144 MDR
(20 less pdr/mdr and 12% elemental absorb from rings for certain bosses)
