The playstyle I was aiming for with Poison is a Kiting style, where you jump in and poison something and then stay safe while the poison kills. It is a relatively slow element compared to the others, but you only need to attack once every 8 seconds, and often can't miss (consider a point in some other skills though, since poison will not reset the Boss heal timer).

Kiting is a very effective strategy, but if you do not enjoy that playstyle then I would not recommend poison in general. Like all skills, AoE poison effects do less damage than single-target effects. Skills that belong to a durable class do less damage than those of a fragile class. Skills that have special requirements do more than those without requirements (i.e. PoisonExplosion consumes a corpse, so it would do more damage than PoisonNova even though they are both considered AoE).

If you want my opinion, have a druid with 1 point in any of the spirits. Have something to clear trash. And have something that kills bosses.

So nado druid+ firewall sorc.

You can permanently keep a boss in place spamming spirits since they can be targeted. On the flip side, good luck keeping any of the spirits alive through any elemental damage trash.
